Fes
In this oldest of the four Imperial Cities lies the heart of Morocco’s arts, culture and knowledge; and the world’s first university, the Kairouyine Mosque, which was founded by a woman. In the oldest part of town, Fes El Bali, the city has succeeded in conserving its traditions and its character throughout the centuries. Here one of the liveliest medinas in the world is to be found. Upon about 741 acres 300,000 people live in a 31-miles labyrinth of streets and alleys. 30,000 craftsmen are busy day and night in unique surroundings. Enthusiasts of leather wear, carpets, copper articles and spices will certainly have a very good time here. Not to be missed: the souks of the tanners and dyers and the famous ‘medersas’ (religious schools that correspond to our convent schools).
