Casablanca
The city has become well known all over the world due to the famous film ‘Casablanca’ with Ingrid Bergmann and Humphrey Bogart. In 1900 it had only 20,000 inhabitants whereas today there are approximately 4 Million people. Casablanca has become the economic capital of the country with about 60 % of Moroccan economy concentrated in this city. It is the most active region of the country and the head offices of almost all the international banks and companies are located here. The particularity of the city which combines the traditional with the modern, is also reflected in Casablanca’s emblem: the Hassan II Mosque, the second largest mosque in the world, the largest being that in Mecca. Its minaret rises more than 200 meters into the sky. The mosque provides room for 25,000 visitors; for 80,000 if the huge square in front of the mosque is taken into account.
